Personal growth coach or therapist: which one do you actually need?

People ask us this more than any other question, usually after months of not asking anyone. Here is the honest answer, including the cases where we say no and send you elsewhere.

The difference in one sentence

A therapist helps you understand and heal what happened to you. A coach helps you decide and build what happens next. Both are real work. They are not the same work, and doing the second one on top of an untreated first one is how people end up exhausted and convinced they failed.

The question that decides it

Ask yourself: when I imagine next year going exactly the way I want, does something in me get excited, or does something in me flinch?

Excited means you mostly need direction, structure and someone who will not let you drift. That is coaching. Flinch means there is something older underneath that deserves proper care first. That is therapy, and it is not a smaller thing — it is the more important thing.

What a coach should never do

A coach should never treat trauma, never diagnose, never tell you to push through grief, and never take your money while you are in crisis. If a coach cannot name the point at which they would refer you on, that is the answer about that coach.

Where we sit

Thoughts in Action is coaching. The four-month Becoming Yourself program is built for people who are functioning and stuck, not for people in acute distress. In the free fifteen-minute call we will tell you plainly which of the two you appear to need, including when the answer is not us.

Common questions

Can you see a coach and a therapist at the same time?

Yes, and it is common. Many people do therapy for what is behind them and coaching for what is ahead of them. Tell both that you are doing it.

Is coaching regulated?

In most countries, no. That is exactly why you should ask any coach where their limits are and when they would refer you to a therapist. A good one answers immediately.

Which is more expensive?

Coaching is usually more expensive per hour and shorter in total. Therapy is often partly covered by insurance where coaching is not. Over a year the totals are frequently closer than people expect.

Still not sure? The fifteen-minute discovery call is free, and it is a real conversation rather than a sales call. You will get a straight answer about whether this is for you — including when it is not.
